Withey

  • This is a great statement on just how impressive Jeff's season-to-date has been:

If you were asking yourself, "Is it impressive that Kansas is keeping the ball after 73.8 percent of Withey's blocks?" the answer is YES, that's an insanely good number. When I charted Anthony Davis' blocks last season, Kentucky only kept the ball 58.4 percent of the time, and that was considered good.

  • I've said it before, so I'll say it again... Withey's 2012-2013 is going to look a WHOLE LOT similar to Davis's 2011-2012, and he'll be lucky to sniff 3rd team All American...

  • CBS has consistently had him in their top 5 so far.

  • If Withey maintains a 5+ bpg average it would be hard to keep him off at least 3rd Team all-American given his dominance defensively. He is certainly though the heavy favorite right now for the NABC National Defensive Player of the Year. Also, if Kansas dominates the Big 12 and lands a top 2 seed heading into the NCAAT he will get his due as he will most likely be a huge part of that.

  • I know Lew changed the criteria for jerseys being hung in AFH to a more subjective decision by the AD. Would NABC National Defensive POY warrant a Withey Jersey hanging? I would think this honor is up there with Vaughn's National Scholar Athlete honor to warrant his jersey hanging.

  • I thought the standards had changed too, but Coach Self's page indicates otherwise:

The concept of retiring the jerseys of outstanding Jayhawk men's basketball players was initiated prior to the 1991-92 season when banners honoring Clyde Lovellette, Danny Manning, B.H. Born, Charlie Black, Paul Endacott, Wilt Chamberlain and Charlie Black were unveiled in the south end of Allen Fieldhouse.

The original criteria for a retired jersey included KU players named college basketball player of the year, most valuable player of the NCAA Tournament or being named a four-time All-American. The list was expanded in 1997 to include Ray Evans, who holds the distinction of being an All-American in both football and basketball.

The criteria was expanded prior to the 2002-03 season to include consensus first-team All-Americans, two-time first-team All-America selections and Academic All-American of the Year.

  • Wikipedia says those are guidelines, not rules:

    Notes:
KU only retires the jerseys, and not the numbers, of past basketball players.
While there are no longer any definite prerequisites for a player to have his or her jersey retired, the University does follow some guidelines, namely: any player named a National Player of the Year by one of either the Associated Press, the Sporting News, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, or by winning the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the John R. Wooden Award, or the Naismith College Player of the Year. Also, being named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, a consensus All-American, a two-time first team All-American selection, a NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, or an Academic All-American of the Year.
It is current policy that no player will have his jersey retired within five years of their last season at Kansas. This rule has not always been the case but Coach Self has indicated that it will remain policy during his tenure as head coach.
Wayne Simien became the 26th player to have his jersey retired when the raising ceremony was conducted during the halftime of the Kansas State game on January 29, 2011.
In addition to Simien, six additional players meet the general guidelines: Mario Chalmers, the 2008 NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Brandon Rush, a two-time first team All-American selection, Cole Aldrich, the 2010 Academic All-American of the Year, Sherron Collins, a 2010 consensus first team All-American, Marcus Morris (basketball), the 2011 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, and Thomas Robinson, a 2012 consensus first team All-American.
