So, this class is pretty salty.

  • Mason
    Frankamp
    Greene
    Selden
    Embiid

Know Embiid is raw but I've gotten used to having a big shot blocking presence on the defensive end, and he's athletic enough that it doesn't look like he'll slow KU down on the break one bit. Gotta love that.

Wish there was more video out there on Mason - or just more info in general. But the backcourt group of Frankamp, Greene and Selden might be the best backcourt group Self has brought in. Better as incoming frosh than Rio and Rush. We'll see if they develop into that caliber of player collegiately.

  • No kidding. 247 has us back to #2 in the rankings. A recruiting class with 4 McD's candidates like this is huge for the program. I also love having a solid class early. We can spend some tme on the spring guys, but really turn to 2014 on time for a change. That's huge this year with official visits starting in 2 months.

  • This has to be considered the most balanced class Self has brought in during his tenure at KU. I'm very pleased.

  • Let's assume McLemore leaves ( I tend to believe he'll be here 2 years) how many starters are in that class?

  • I had an AAU coach tell me that Mason is an underrated get for this class. Likes him a lot more than Tharpe at the same stage.

I'll add to this thread with some more thoughts later on.

I have heard the same thing about Mason. His stock was rising when he committed to KU, Tharpes was falling. Just from comparing highlight reels Mason looks way better then Tharpe. Wouldn't be surprised if Mason ends up a 4 star prospect.

  • Mason will be a starter at KU before his career here is over. He is much better than his rankings. If he could shoot the ball he'd be a top 50-75 guy. And I expect him to improve in this area signifcantly while at Kansas. Sherron Collins came to KU with his outside shooting considered a liability.

While I agree on Frank Mason, Sherron was always a good shooter. He was one of the 2 best PGs in the class for a reason. Kid could do everything, and do it really well.

Jerry and I have discussed this a couple of times. Mason is the kind of guy who's clearly been getting better and whose stock has risen through his last prep 12-18 months. A guy like Tharpe had a lot of hype before his star faded significantly in his last 12-18 months as a prep. I think Mason will come in and learn a lot his first year at KU, then we'll watch him blossom into a tough competitor who always wants the ball when the game is on the line. He's not Collins and isn't as good as Collins, but he has a lot of the same mental attributes and attitudes.

"Salty" is a good way to describe it. It's a little wing-heavy to consider it the best in the country from my view, but the wings are really, really good. And the combo-guard-ness of Mason, Selden, and Frankamp is really exciting.

    Frank Mason is a 247Sports 4-star prospect.
