I don't think anyone is bashing Telep. He is a good evaluator of high school players. ESPN's rankings were a joke before Telep. Now they appear to be as accurate as any. But there is no doubt Telep is just making an educated guess on this one. No one outside of Randle and his family would really have anything more than a guess on this one.

There's no doubt that Telep can be good at his job. He has improved the ESPN rankings and knows how to break down a player. The problem is ESPN (and, technically, his final months at Scout were bad). In his final months at Scout, he obviously knew he was making a move, and his content got more and more shallow and his insights non-existent. Since moving to ESPN it's more of the same -- and that makes perfect sense for his new audience. 247, Rivals, and Scout's target audiences are the hardcore fans. We obsess about everything from the recruiting to the games. ESPN's audience is much broader. The information needs to be basic and accessible. The ESPN audience will feel like they know all they need just by knowing about their team's commits after the verbal. They don't need the ups and downs. Telep's new job is to appeal to the masses, not us, and his insights match.

  • it was just a few weeks ago that Telep called Roberson to KU... and he promptly chose Syracuse.

    Not bashing, just saying.

From what I've heard from a few guys - nobody knew where Roberson was going. Every analyst was more or less guessing on that one, as the Roberson camp had people putting out tons of different info.

  • If Cal told Randle that worst case with going to UK ends with him as Cal's assistant, how is that not promising a job?

Did Cal really say this to Randle?

    According to the USA Today:

Cal's message to J Randle (@J30_RANDLE) post-injury? "Said worst case I could come to UK & be his asst after I graduate." Blog coming Mon...

  • Obviously Cal doesn't have to worry about rules... His brand is bigger than the NCAA

    Tralfaz

  • The funny thing is that, even post-injury, no one believes Randall's future is anywhere but the NBA. Cal's message, presumably, was that he's not going anywhere and there's no reason to worry about him leaving for the NBA before Randall does. It just seems like a sloppy way to make the point.

  • Man, not everything Cal says is a recruiting pitch or an NCAA violation. I'm pretty sure this was intended to humorous, but Cal saying it and Randle repeating it. Doubt there was any nefarious intent.

  • I don't know Aaron, Cal is as slick as the RNC when it comes to staying on message... the sad truth is that if Cal were coaching at KU 99% of our fans would defend him just as hard as UK fans defend him now.

I have to agree with you here Aaron. People are taking this comment too serious.

I'm no Cal defender: I think he's as sleazy as they come and I think he gets HUGE backing and help from major media outlets like CBS Sports and, most notably, ESPN. I'm just saying that in this case, I think people are trying to take what seems like an offhand comment and turn it into a wild recruiting violation. If Cal was really worried about Randle no longer being an NBA player, he's skeevy enough to have moved on, pulled out of the "race" for Julius's services, and wouldn't be recruiting him at all any more. I just don't get how something like "you can always stay and be an assistant coach" amounts to some gigantic issue.

  • Didn't Randle say he wanted to win and contend for a national championship? Or something along those lines? Or am I confusing him with someone else? Texas is obviously a good school and puts a bunch of people in the NBA, but if you want to win, contend for championships, play in front of big crowds, and go to the NBA, Kansas is the place. We'll be loaded next year.

I'm actually on the low end for how much I believe he's consistently cheating. This was just a weird line though. I don't know where it fits. I don't think it was an attempt to cheat. I do believe it was strategic though as a joking way to say he'll be there.

He and Wiggins both have made statements to that effect. However, for Randle, his final four being Kentucky, Kansas, Florida, and Texas...Texas is close to home and the other three should all be excellent next year (it wouldn't surprise me to see all three in the preseason top five). So, unless he chooses Texas, he's going to win...
