KU vs SLU Running Thoughts Thread

  • If the play by play guy calls one more three pointer a step back that is not I might drive down to Sprint Center and take a dump in the ESPN truck. Where do they find these clowns?

  • When Releford plays well it really really changes this team. He makes running offense so hard for the other team and if he can shoot it a bit and get out in transition he really tends to pick up a lot of fouls and challenge the other team in the open floor.

  • Despite what Aaron thinks argue...Tharpe is playing better than I expected as a backup PG. I suspect he will be one of the guys that Self has that frustrates the crap out of people when he "steals" minutes from guys perceived as more talented.

Kid has work to do on the defensive end but he is running the offense pretty well when he is in. To the point that he was running PG and EJ was playing wing for a good portion of the half. 11 assist and no turnovers since the MSU game is pretty solid in my view.

  • It is funny watching Ellis on defense. I think the main thing he needs to learn is that he is not nearly as important to KU as he was in high school. If you get elevated hack the shit out of someone because we have 3 more guys who can do your job if needed for the most part.

  • Two things we do on offense drive me nuts and stagnate us.

    1. When we seem determined to throw it to Withey not over the top and ask him to post up. Just not his game.

    2. When EJ is hunting for 3-point shots. When he takes them in the flow that is good. When he is hunting for a look he takes some questionable ones.

  • Jeff looked very good in the last few minutes. It's something about when Kevin is in the game..The guys just have way more energy.

  • Tharpe has been better than I thought since Atlanta, but I just don't like the offense when he's on in place of EJ. I feel like we settle for jumpers a lot more and the ball movement just isn't the same.

  • Some of would prefer that Adams play over Tharpe given that Tharpe can't shoot, can't get into the lane, and can't defend. Now Adams looks terrible right now running the point and his shot is even worse. But we see his potential as a defender when he is moving his feet, and he certainly has the athleticism and ability to run the point when he gets that this is not street ball. Marquis Teague looked like crap last year when KU played UK the first time. But Cal let him play, not that he had much of a choice, and Teague became very good come season's end. Obviously Adams would develop much more given more PT and the experience that comes with playing in actual games. I also don't think Adams would be as wild on offense if he wasn't trying to impress coach to get more PT. I would much prefer we try to develop Adams and take our lumps early on than settle for a guy like Tharpe that will give us no advantage come March.

I usually agree with this line of thinking (think 2009-2010 with Brady over Elijah), but not in this case. Tharpe is shooting well (and has always charted well shooting in practice) and making generally good decisions. I just don't think the offense "flows" as well with him, in part because we don't post entry pass as well. However, I think Adams is a trainwreck. I'd nominate him for the most likely transfer, regardless of playing time.
