Justise Winslow

  • The article is Insider, but Telep has Winslow visiting this weekend too, weather permitting.

  • I like Winslow. Good overall player and would probably be a great defender under Self. I like him a lot more than Keith Frazier.

  • It is just starting to feel a bit like we have some momentum in recruiting. I know it is something hard to quantify but I feel like we have a pretty good mix of unknown factors (which lead to people thinking they could get playing time) and quality already in the bag which assures quality but not superstar players that assures the top guys they would not be going it alone. We have a lot of top 20-50 guys who are going to be 2-3 year players but are not likely to scare off a top 10 type talent, at least not yet.

We need to strike while the iron is hot for next year and the year after.

What's really weird to me is how we've transitioned our success in recruiting to so heavily wing and guard oriented. All of our scholarship bigs under Self have been drafted, but we are really struggling to land any of the bigger names in big men. Just odd to me that our success in recruiting is so heavily slanted to wings.

  • I hope Jerry can stop by and provide some insight, both on Winslow's game and his interest level in KU. From the little I've gathered, the interest is pretty high.

Getting a top 25 like guy to commit early is so huge for building the class. It just seems to settle other recruits minds that they indeed have someone to play with.

  • He seems to be enjoying himself: "I'm kinda used to this weather now. Not really cold to me anymore. Starting to adjust to this life in Lawrence. #KU"

  • From an earlier Winslow thread:

In Texas, the three wings are very talented; and I think three programs each get one in Justise Winslow, Justin Jackson and Kelly Oubre.
    Winslow - best all-around player
    Justin Jackson - best shooter/scorer
Oubre - one of the most improved nationally in 2014 over the last 6-8 months.

  • Would be a great get. Any chance for an early commit? lol

  • Who knows how much can be read into it, but his twitter feed has been mostly pics of him in KU gear.

  • Pretty good highlight video from his trip to the Under Armour Classic.

Like I said - he's a solid all-around wing. He can score in the low\mid-post, he can hit jumpers out to beyond the 3pt line, he can pass pretty well.

I know he'll draw the inevitable Harden and Langford comparisons, but I don't think they're 100% spot on. Still trying to figure out who he reminds me of most.

    Justise Winslow '14, St. John's Junior, 20...

Winslow completed his San Diego trip with a decent dunk that dad would be proud of and witness as his high school assistant coach. Winslow, who is wanted by just about every blue-chip college, scored a game high 28 points in the last game and was named to the Under Armour Holiday Classic All-Tournament team. Justise's dad, Rickie Winslow, was one of the last official members of the Phi Slamma Jamma fraternity at the University of Houston and was selected 28th in the 1987 NBA draft. Producer's Note: There was only about 10 minutes between games and between the consolation championship awards ceremony and interviewing the winning Lincoln players and coach there wasn't enough time to interview Winslow. But Justise was willing to wait until the 1st quarter ended in the following game. And Justise Winslow actively sought out SportsOnTheSide to confirm that he was wanted for an interview. Many players of his caliber would not wait to be interviewed or certainly not search out the person seeking an interview. The collegiate institution that Justise chooses will be a better one on and off the court. Interest is legit. Winslow is a physical beast like Wayne Selden. More athletic than Selden but not the creator like Selden for others. Winslow does have a very complete game as a small forward. In the backside of elite players in his class.

  • Either Winslow is visiting Duke this weekend or the Duke staff visited him tonight. I'm guessing the former based on my loose understanding of the rules.

Edit: confirmed he's in Durham. Quite the travel schedule.
