Jerry - Jorgenson v. Mason

  • Jerry, with Jorgenson's proximity to Lawrence and his familiarity with Conner Frankamp, a lot of KU fans are much more familiar with his game than they are with the game of Frank Mason. Additionally, Jorgenson garnered more notable "high major" interest than Mason, including having accepted and then backed out of mizery. Now that he's committed to Georgia Tech, would you mind taking a few minutes to break down the difference between those two particular players and why you think Frank Mason is a better fit for KU?

I wouldn't say Jorgenson has garner more notable high major attention. He had more as a junior but then Missouri recruited over him in his own class. Alabama and others have watched Jorgenson since decommitting and have passed.

Mason is better at every aspect of the game that I can think of. Not by a lot, except for overall defense, but Mason is better in every area I can think of.

  • I see you have Mason ranked at 79... I don't see Jorgenson in the top 100...

I see you have Mason ranked at 79... Alerik Freeman is ranked 68... why do you think we quit recruiting Freeman so early in the process. At one point the interest seemed really high on both ends

He struggled mightily this summer at the games the staff watched him. We started exploring other options and ended up snagging Selden instead. I'm perfectly fine with that.

Kansas might have thought they weren't going to get him. Freeman is a scoring shooting guard. No where near a point guard. Think Kansas was looking for a prototypical point guard like Frank Mason.

I guess from the Kansas perspective, we've seen and heard a lot more about Jorgenson for a lot longer, and the Kansas offer to Mason came almost completely out of left field, even for a lot of close observers of recruiting.

Thanks, Jerry. That's the impression I've gotten as well - Mason's just a flat-out better player in every respect.

Correct. Jorgenson played for a higher profile AAU team. Kansas was ahead of the curve in offering Frank Mason. Certainly, they tried first with some higher ranked prospects like Roddy Peters.

  • I sat with coaches while they watched Freeman - he didn't have an offer after they watched him play over and over. He just wasn't very good in any game they watched. I think there was some real questions about how he would fit as a small 2G, especially since they were pretty sure they were going to get Selden AND Frankamp.

And, of course, the high-level point guards appear to be the top 3-4 targets for 2014 as well. I think Mason is going to be very good in the Self vision of a point guard, but a guy like Tyus Jones would just be a clear step up. Jorgenson was never going to fit that mold, especially defensively.
