  • Not sure why Self calls Frankamp an emergency point guard. Seems like he has the ability to play point at the next level and is a great shooter. With AW 3, Greene, and Selden it would seem we could best find time for Frankamp as a point guard next season. There is nothing wrong with having a Jay Burson or Steve Nash type point guard on the floor.

    He's not really a PG. He can play it where needed, because he handles well and has good vision, but he's a shooter\gunner at heart and is much better suited to playing off the ball.

  • I think Conner's ability to play the point in the traditional sense may be fairly limited. I don't think we want him handling the ball from baseline to baseline most of the time. He can do it if he has to but that is not ideal. What I think he can do is use his shot to create space, get around a guy who closes out too hard and make a play for a teammate with pretty good consistency. I would think of him as being in the mold that Kirk played to Miles when they were both here (without comparing relative abilities at this point) in that he could play on the ball but should be very strong off the ball at both scoring and making plays to get others involved.

    That's similar to a suggestion I made a couple months back, but went with more of the Boschee role.

    Boschee never really had, in my view, a flair for play making. Conner does. He will look like a creator at times much more than Boschee really ever was. I think he very well could be a PG at a lot of schools. But his role at KU is going to be a guy that can run off a ton of screens that you have to guard honestly at all times. He is not just a specialist shooter and will only need to be dangerous enough to keep people from really overplaying him.

  • I experienced deja vu then remembered the attached thread (yay search feature). My issues with the Hinrich and Chalmers comparisons are height (less so with Mario) and atheticism. Am I under estimating Frankamp from an athletic perspective?

  • He's a pretty good athlete. People see the white skin and he gets the same rap on him that Kirk did. But he can get up and dunk pretty easily.

    His shooting is his best attribute, but he's really a good ball handler and a pretty crafty playmaker and passer.

    He's a better player right now than Boschee ever was. Much more well rounded.

    I think that last line is important. People will want to compare him as a shooter to Boschee but he is a much better player overall. I am hesitant to compare him to Kirk because...well I just don't want to hang that on the kid but I think if you were picking from Boschee or Kirk he is much closer to the later.

    He doesn't have Kirk's size, but he has a lot of his other attributes. He may not be quite as athletic, but he's far from a stiff.

    One of the great things Kirk had was a killer attitude, and Frankamp has that same attitude.

    I think that after this season in high school the kid will be nearly ecstatic to not be covered in a box and 1 anymore. He was getting doubles as he crossed half court for much of the season at this point. It took a long time for a lot of City League coaches to have that pride beaten out of them (one I know personally would not admit he was a D-1 player until this year) and finally stop trying to play him more or less straight up. By this year most had given up trying to guard him normally.

  • If you can't admit that kid is D1, you shouldn't be coaching. That's terrible.
