Frank Mason

  • Will have the opportunity to watch him this weekend at the National Prep Showcase.

    Jerry Meyer

  • Excellent. Look forward to your report on how he's developing.

  • Quiet first half. Didn't look for his jumper. Got oversized at the rim a couple times. Had a slick floater. Didn't turn ball over. Found shooters. Played great on ball defense.

    Par for corse.

Jerry, with the anticipated backcourt we all project right now for next years team, what kind of impact do you see Frank having? Is it going to be a couple of years before he sees the court, or do you see him competing with Connor, Nadiir, and Rio?

  • What do you mean by oversized at the rim? I haven't heard that expression.

Frank Mason will compete. Has a special niche as an on the ball defender and being a winner. Strength and feel for the game. See him as an off the bench type guy who provides vital contribution. Could take the position over. Might just be a speciality guy. One is the over. One is the under against the line that I predict for him.

  • Strong game for Frank Mason- game high 21 pts, 6-8 shooting, 3-3 from three, 6-11 from the line, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists, 4 turnovers in 40 minutes in a 72-64 win.

Mason lead his team on a run midway through the second half and they ran away with it. Numbers indicate the type of game he had.

    Song remains the same.

    Jerry Meyer

  • This is great to see. Thanks, Jerry!

  • In his game today, Mason's team won 85-75. Mason had 9 its on 4-7 from the field. 0-1 from the arc and 1-1 at the line. 2 rebounds.

  • I like the numbers better from the first game, but you can't deny the guy is a winner. Saw some video of him that claims he is 111-9 in his high school career. I know two of those losses were in the state title game. I like how he can penetrate and get to the rim. Appears to have a slow release on his jumper but should improve in time I would guess. If he is as good an on the ball defender as Jerry claims he should be able to crack the rotation. I can see Mason getting a lot of minutes given that it appears Self would rather use Frankamp off the ball based on his comments last week and Tharpe is really the only other true point on the team. And we have seen that Tharpe is not a very good on the ball defender, or off the ball for that matter. I am also not sure on Adams yet as a primary ball handler.

  • he seems to struggle at the line... hopefully he can fix that.

I strongly suspect Frankamp will be the primary ballhandler next year despite the staff preferring that he's off the ball. That is unless Tharpe gets worlds better from now until then.

Sort of a Boschee situation where he can hopefully be moved off ball with an elite pg coming in.

  • If Tharpe sticks, you have to figure Self gives him a good shot at starting just due to experience in the system.

That being said, with guys as good as Brannen, Conner, and Wayne - it might be worth it to roll with them from the start.

Exactly how I see it playing out.
