  • Would love to have Jerry comment on what Embiid playing well and having his team win that event means in the scheme of the high school season. Is that event relevant? Is Wiggins team good? Embiid's? Lots of high school players put up huge numbers against subpar competition, but it seems like this might Embiid might have had a pretty impressive performance against elite level talent. And if that's the case, should we be adjusting our expectations of him likely being a very raw, 3 year player to someone who might be able to make an impact sooner than later?

  • Hopefully Jerry can drop by, but in the meantime, here's what I know.

It was the Beast Athletic Shootout in Florida. Embiid was MVP. The all-tourny team was Andrew Wiggins, Mitchell Wilbekin,
Delano Spencer, Dominic Woodson, and Deshaun Mormon. Wiggins' Huntington Prep is generally seen as top 10 nationally. I have not seen Embiid's The Rock school in rankings, but don't know enough about the school or the rankings to know if they're eligible.

Embiid is soaring in the rankings and seen as a fairly raw, NBA body with a great chance to start at some point next season. Look at the rotation, even with Randle -- Lucas, Perry, Randle, Embiid.

Embiid will absolutely start for us next year. Maybe not the second he steps on the court, but if he doesn't start 95% of our games, I would be shocked. He and Selden are the "locks" for starting spots at this point.

I think we'll see Greene starting by the time they start league play.

After seeing how poorly Tharpe has played the past two games I sure hope Mason is as good as Aaronmakes him out to be.

  • Not to turn this into a lineup thread, but isn't smart money for opening day:

    Tharpe
    Selden
    Greene
    Ellis
    Lucas

    Then by mid-season:
Mason or Tharpe -- toughest call
    Selden
    Greene
    Ellis
    Embiid

If Randle comes, obviously he's in from day one, but the question is Lucas or Ellis at day one, then if Self goes small with Ellis, can Embiid unseat him. Then there's fan reaction if Frankamp doesn't get good minutes.

That's a tough call on Frankcamp, but it will all depend on how he plays. White and Adams aren't getting minutes because they're just not playing very good. I know there's been a lot of talk about Adams not working out as a jayhawk, but I could easily see White moving on to somewhere where he can get playing time too. He hasn't really shown much this season, he's supposed to be a sharp shooter, but he doesn't hit the shot when he's open, and he hasn't shown he can create his own shot either.

I think the smart money is something similar to that, but I wouldn't bet against Frankamp starting ahead of Greene, even alongside Selden and Tharpe. If Tharpe is the starting "point guard," we'll still struggle to handle the ball, especially against pressure, and Conner can better help to relieve that than Greene can. Green's a fine, fine player, but he's not overly athletic and his biggest weakness is ball handling. If we're still short a primary ballhandler, it wouldn't surprise me to see us go with three secondary-quality handlers over having the taller Greene on the court.

The thing about Mason is this...Jerry and I (and I think BHam, too) think 2 important things. First, he's underrated by all the recruiting services other than ours, and Jerry is more afraid he has him too low than too high even though we already have him higher than anyone else. Second, he's the perfect fit for the role we need him to play: he's a good defender, he's tough, he's good with the ball, and he's a leader who can initiate offense without needing to score. Basically, he's a heckuva lot like what Russell Robinson was in 2006-2008.

Is he's going to be an All American? No. Is he even going to be all conference? No. But, I think he's going to fit in extremely well with what we need him to do: distribute the ball to the extraordinary shooters we're surrounding him with, play tough defense, and be an alpha dog leader when we need him to be.

  • I wouldn't say any "safe" bet includes Landen Lucas. If anything, I think it's Ellis\Traylor. I have a hard time buying that Lucas is suddenly starter-quality for Kansas.

Man, my reading comprehension is going down because Lucas isn't a safe bet to do anything other than absorb some fouls. I'd say the "safe" bet is Ellis and Embiid, with a better shot at Traylor than Lucas.

I struggled with that one, and maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it seems like Self only lets guys redshirt when he sees real potential.

On White, do people think he redshirts? He follows more of the model of taking a year to prove he's worthy but in need of time.

Good point about White. The problem, though, is that then puts in effectively in the same class with three other wings who are just better than he is (though at least one of them will likely leave early).

It becomes a somewhat circular issue. If the class behind him will all be around, when does he play?

If some of them might leave even a year early, isn't it better for him to have an extra year in town?

Wiggins team is very good. Great win for Embiid's team. I'd put over/under on Embiid being at Kansas at 2 years. This win and MVP doesn't change anything I think about Embiid, just validates it.

Unless Landen Lucas drastically improved this year, Kansas doesn't want him in the starting line up. Some desperate recruiting for numbers at the end in that recruiting class.

I was shocked when Kansas pursued Lucas.

My shock was as high as anyone's when we pursued Lucas. My thought of him finding his way in the lineup early in the season is based on 2 things, and admittedly could be totally off base. First, Self gave him the redshirt. That is something he previously did almost exclusively for players who proved some worth to the team. Second, I see Embiid as the starter at some point, and I could see Self wanting more of a center holding that spot until Embiid is ready as opposed to Traylor or Ellis who would play a very different role in the lineup. Heck, maybe Embiid shows up and is ready day one.

I think Embiid likely isn't ready day 1 but starts day 1 by default because no one is any better.
