Decent article from Rustin Dodd
Almost 10 years ago, as the KU athletic department was in turmoil, three men brought Bill Self to Kansas to replace Roy Williams as the Jayhawkss hiring are no longer at KU, but the story of what could be the most crucial 14 days in KU sports history lives on.
Glad it worked out how it did. Still think very little of Dean at this point. To preserve what he had built at UNC he was quite willing to trample on the chance of one of his guys to build his own legacy somewhere else. Yes Roy has had success at UNC. But he will never be to that program what Dean was. He is a continuation of Dean. He is Dean's boy come home to tend the crops.
At KU he had a chance to be what I think Self will be in the end which is the most readily identified coach with the program by the time he leaves. Roy at UNC can't be Self at KU. He can't be coach K at Duke. In the end Roy will have lots of money and success. But he won't be the modern guy for that program. it will always be Dean and Jordan.
He will be, in short, what the KU search committee ruled out: a caretaker hired to get the program to the next great coach who can be the face of the program. Yeah, he's been there 10 years and probably has another 5-10, and 15-20 years is longer than a typical "caretaker," but he was an established coach brought in to take care of the program until a real successor emerges.
We came out way on top in the exchange... Self is exactly what KU needed. Williams had unbelievable success at KU, but he always had his demons... Williams has his 2 National Championships at UNC, but they just don't feel like they're his.
I wonder what will happen to UNC and Duke when K and Roy retire and the ACC falls apart and are absorbed into the super conferences? Will they have to go through what Kentucky and Indiana had to go through? Years of mediocrity?
Live to love, love to live
It occurred to me after Sunday's game that Self is now 7-0 against the other coaches in the 2003 triangle.

This right here is absolutely correct. I remember how mad I was when Roy left, but to be honest I'm as happy as can be that Self is the HC. He's the best HC in the country and I don't think it's close right now. If he stays at KU another 10 years can you imagine the legacy that will be left even if he never gets another NC? He has maintained such a high level of winning that most take 30 wins for granted now.
I hate to bring this up, but on the Tigerboard Fijii or whatever, is defending the hire of Snider over Self. I can't help myself sometimes to go over and view that train wreck of a board and program, but I take great satisfaction in their mediocrity.
In their defense, hindsight is 20/20. We had, not long before, hired an elite ACC program assistant to take over and he had proven an excellent hire. They had the choice between following that model and trying a successful mid-major coach. Thankfully, they chose wrong.
