So, uh, this one is a little weird
UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad was not born in Los Angeles. His is not 20 years old.
If you told me the story and omitted the name I would have picked him I think. Ellis looks old but was not managed quite like Shabazz was.
The article that ran this morning (posted on TFS) mentioned that Shabazz was actually twenty, but it didn't make a big deal out of it.
Is it illegal to misrepresent his age like that?
Live to love, love to live
So, from the story we were never really in the Bazz race as we offered nothing that Ron Homes wanted - proximity to Vegas, lack of depth, would have to share spotlight and PT, and we would have had high expectations.
From the LA Times article with my comments in parenthesis:
But in the end, he said, the family's choice of UCLA "was strictly a business decision."
Westwood is close to Las Vegas (KU is not), making it easy for Holmes to attend games. The team also had little depth (we thought KU would have depth with AW3 and Peters in the mix and PE playing like he has the past few games all season). Head coach Ben Howland would have no choice but to showcase Muhammad, Holmes said. At Duke or Kentucky he would have had to share the spotlight (With BMAC and JW) or even risk sitting on the bench (would have shared PT with Rele).
Also, expectations were low (We would have been pre-season top 5 with Bazz). "If Shabazz takes UCLA past the first round of the tournament, that's a success," Holmes said. "It shows that he's a winner."
