So obviously Marcus Smart is their motor, but recently Brown has been asserting himself here and there and can go for 20 on a given night. That said, is the common belief that Releford will be guarding Smart? Elijah is likely on Forte, and Ben on Brown?
I certainly go ahead and put my defense out like that and take my chances with Young on Nash. OSU is gonna be a matchup problem if Nash is hot. I almost prefer to put Ellis in the game quick and see if we can force Nash to pickup fouls trying to keep him off the blocks.
I can't imagine that guarding Smart with Releford is going to work out well for us, but I expect to see it frequently. Releford is a tremendous defender, but he's BY FAR better off the ball (like against McGruder) than on the ball (like against Khalif Wyatt). Honestly, this is what looks like our Achilles heel to me - we don't have anyone who is above average defending on the ball against good point guards. For this reason, Michigan terrifies me, but Indiana does not. I believe that Releford on Smart is going to be a mistake, especially when there are other legitimate options for him to cover (Nash to start and Forte when he comes in, shifting Fro to Nash). I'd take my chances with Johnson on Smart, though I might shift Releford to him in small doses when Elijah is out and Tharpetastic is in.
