2014 Basketball Recruiting

  • For the 2014 class, it appears our biggest needs are going to be point guard and a big man. It appears that our point guard list starts with Tyus Jones and ends with Emmanuel Mudiay. It also appears that there is significant mutual interest from those two guard as well, so what are our chances at landing either of them? If those two ships sail, are we going all in with Mason / Tharpe / Adams at point or do we have other options?

For post players, I know very little about the 2014 crop since I've focused so much on 2013. I would guess we're in on Lattin and Kavon Looney, but I don't know much about anyone else. Jerry?

  • I think we've also expressed interest in Jordan McLaughlin as a point guard, but I can't tell if there's mutual interest there.

  • Joel Berry and Rashad Vaughn are on that list as well. Vaughn might be more of a 2 however.

  • I really feel like we need another PG in 2014. I want an elite one, but we should be prepared to monitor the top 50 types.

  • Here's an overinclusive list we figured out a bit ago. I feel like Jerry weighed in at one point, but can't find that thread.

A Far Too Early Look at 2014 Recruiting

I was checking out 247s recruiting rankings (available at the top of the screen) and saw Jerry already has his 2014 list at 50 and has inco

  • Now Frankamp may be better of the ball but with Seldon, Green, and White as shooters and Adams as someone who appears would be better as a 2, Frankamp has all the skills to be an elite point. I think we will see a lot of Frankamp at point next year to get him more PT. There is nothing wrong with an elite shooter as your point considering he has great court vision, handle, and basketball IQ.

  • Don't want to be a downer but as of now I'd predict Tyus Jones to Duke and Emmanuel Mudiay to Kentucky. Certainly a lot of time, but probability right now points that direction.

As to Frankamp, he is an elite shooter but not an elite point guard. Smart player who is skilled and can play the point, but he doesn't get into the lane and create like an elite point guard does. He could be a good point guard but he is best if he has a running mate (doesn't matter what position you label him) who primarily creates off the dribble.

  • Sounds like Boschee.

Jerry, does someone like Mason or Selden fill that role of a "running mate" to you? I think either of those guys would be a great pairing with Frankamp for this very reason. People expecting Conner to be a lead guard I think are missing his key abilities.

Yes, Frank Mason and Wayne Selden do fit that role. One reason I think Mason gets minutes.

I feel like Mason may be a MAJOR catalyst for next year's squad (and really, all of his time at KU). Hinrich was great all four years, but he was exceptional after Miles arrived and he moved off the ball. I see a lot of Hinrich, and less of Boschee, in Miles. Admittedly, I haven't seen as much of Frankamp as I did of Boschee and Hinrich, though.

Was the second "Miles" supposed to be "Frankamp?"
